How can I choose the right kind of photo?

The better the photo the better the artwork:

As a simple rule the better the photo the better the artwork. You do not need a picture taken by the photograph but for the best results send us the highest quality digital or print photo you can manage.

If you send your photo to us we will be able to tell you straightaway if your photo can be used or not.

We have put together a few guidelines below and we hope they will help you in choosing the right kind of pictures.

Good photos:

The photo is in focus.(Even slight blurring can make it difficult to see details needed for a painting or personalised pop art).
The photo shows the colour of the eyes.(Eyes convey so much and without detail a portrait can lack character).
The photo has good lighting and is neither too dark nor too bright.

This photo has both good clear lighting and strong detail when you zoom in making it perfect for any of our personalised art designs.
Example of good photo with sharp details      Zoomed in sharp photo

The subject  fills up most of the frame. A good rule of thumb for portraits is that the subject should fill at least half of a standard photo and you should be able to make out clearly individual eyelashes when zoomed in.

The subject in this photo fills perfectly the frame and has perfect lighting.

Poor photos - Best to avoid:

These pictures would give disappointing results.

out of focus photo                      subject too far

Out of focus picture.                              The subject is too far in the frame and will lose all its details when zoomed or cropped in.

overexposed          underexposed

Poor lighting due to overexposed subject and shadow crossing the face.           Photo is too dark.

low-resolution-digital-photo         low resolution detail

At first sight this photo seems ok but its low digital resolution (less than 500 kb size) makes for very poor details and unsuitable printing quality.

As a rule try to avoid sending us pictures taken from mobile phone. If you have such a photo taken from mobile phone that you really want made into artwork, send it to us and we will advise you of the feasibility.
